Noise & Waste
Noise
Noise limits apply in certain areas of the Port of Esbjerg.
According to the local district plan for the Dokken-area, which is located behind berths 307-308-309-310 and 401, noise levels must not exceed 60 dB(A) at any hour.
This means that ships carrying out work or operating machinery, whose noise level measured at the quayside exceeds 60 dB(A), must not be berthed at berths 307, 308, 309, 310 and 401.
You will find a chart of the exact areas where the noise limits apply below.

1. Purpose of the waste disposal system
Through the establishment of an effective waste disposal system, the Port of Esbjerg wishes to contribute a positive environmental effect by handling the operational and industrial waste from vessels responsibly. The objective is to create a flexible waste disposal system for vessels calling at the port, which contributes to reducing pollution of the sea environment.
2. Port liabilities
The Port of Esbjerg’s Board is liable for drawing up of this plan for handling port waste. The Port Director is responsible for implementing the plan and any required maintenance.
Please contact the port’s administration office on +45 7512 4144, if you have questions concerning the waste disposal system.
3. General rules for the waste disposal system
The Port of Esbjerg has established a waste disposal system for the receipt and handling of waste from vessels pursuant to the executive order issued by the Danish Ministry of the Environment No 1003 of 10 December 2002.
When it comes to waste, the Port of Esbjerg is divided into three sections: marina, traffic port and fishing port. Vessels calling at the port must inform the port of the amount and the type of waste that the vessel is carrying on board when berthing. At the same time, it must inform the port of the type of waste it plans to leave at the port. Vessels that have dispensation according to the executive order § 18 are, however, exempt from this.
The following general terms must be fulfilled:
Delivery times
Delivery of waste must take place within the port’s normal working hours. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday from 07:00 am till 2:00 pm.
Vessels that exclusively call at the Port of Esbjerg outside normal working hours can deliver waste if the vessel can document that delivery within normal working hours is impossible. Special terms will then apply c.f. regulations on the individual types of waste.
Notice
Vessels wishing to deliver waste at the Port of Esbjerg, must announce this to the port at least 24 hours prior to arrival. This is done by filling out a booking form and returning it by fax to +45 7513 4050 or by e-mail to vagt@portesbjerg.dk
The booking form is available here and can also be obtained from the Port’s Maritime Department.
Quantities
Only quantities of operational waste, which correspond to the vessel type and size and which are proportionate to the latest port of call can be returned without payment of duties.
Fees
The Port of Esbjerg does not charge any fee for the collection of normal ship waste. However, the port will charge a special fee in the following cases:
- The quantity of waste exceeds the quantity of waste that the vessel would have produced since the vessel last called a port under normal circumstances.
- The vessel wants to deliver waste outside normal working hours.
- The vessel does not pay normal ship and commodity dues.
- The vessel has not submitted a booking form stating the waste to be collected 24 hour prior to its call at the Port of Esbjerg.
- Waste is disposed in the wrong containers or placed on the quays without prior notice.
- Waste oils contain less than 65 percent oil or contain substances other than oil and water.
Any unforeseen costs associated with waste disposal will be charged to the vessel. This applies for costs connected to delays (no matter the reason), no-shows or, for example, if the wastewater has a lower pump speed than anticipated.
Types of waste
The Port of Esbjerg is able to receive the following types of waste:
- Oil and chemical waste.
- Residues and mixtures of liquid substances in bulk.
- Hazardous materials when packed appropriately.
- Oily waste that contains emulsifying agents (that will prevent the separation in an oil and water phase).
- Sewage.
- Operational waste.
Ownership
Ownership of the waste is transferred to the Port of Esbjerg when the waste has been deposited on the quay.
LiabilityThe owner of the vessel is liable for the correctness of all the shipmaster’s information about the waste, the type of it, composure, quantities, time of collection and any injuries in connection with waste handling due to errors or deficiencies. Thus, the owner of the ship is liable for any injury irrespective of guilt that is a consequence of the shipmaster’s incorrect, misleading or insufficient information. This shall also apply to injuries sustained by third parties as a consequence of the shipmaster’s incorrect, misleading or insufficient information.
Pursuant to the executive order from the Danish Ministry for the Environment No 1003, vessels that e.g. omit to dispose of waste pursuant to the order regulations or that do not comply with the rules of notification can be punished with a fine or in case of gross negligence with mitigated imprisonment or prison up to two years.

Further information is available from the port guard. Please call +45 7612 4000 (open 24 hours) or by e-mail: vagt@portesbjerg.dk
4. Collection methods and disposal methods
For relatively large amounts of waste, containers and/or tank lorries will be made available as agreed. The Port of Esbjerg also receives oil waste in drums and cans.
Vessels must under all circumstances ensure that they pump the oil waste into these reservoirs. A clarification of where these reservoirs are must be available.

6. Consultation with users
Each year the Port of Esbjerg invites a number of the regular users of the port to discuss how the waste disposal system is working.
As far as the traffic port is concerned, such a discussion will take place at one of Consultative Port Committee meetings. Matters relating to the fishing area will be discussed with the fishing association and the marina with a board of representatives of the users of this section of the port.
7. Coming into force
These regulations will come into force on 27 December 2002 and replace all other previously issued regulations.
