The new multi-terminal at the port of Esbjerg opened last week and the first ship to call early Saturday morning was a RoRo vessel carrying 1,200 cars.

Early Saturday morning, 7 December, the huge car carrier, the City of St. Petersburg became the first vessel to call at the new multi-terminal at the port of Esbjerg.

Measuring 140 by 22 metres, the City of St. Petersburg arrived from Zeebrugge carrying 1,200 cars which were unloaded by Scandinavian Auto Logistics (SAL), and the cars will now be distributed to dealerships across Denmark.

The City of St. Petersburg has a draught of 6.6 metres, 21,143 gross tonnage and offers a maximum speed of 15.1 knots. The RoRo carrier was loaded with 1,200 cars.

Good prospects for multi-terminal

Construction of the new multi-terminal began this summer, and the project was completed last week, right on schedule. Good timing, according to Michael Lodberg, Commercial Director of SAL.

“For us, the opening of the multi-terminal was a just-in-time event. The fact that it was completed now means that we have sufficient space available at precisely the right time, because the period just before Christmas is traditionally a time when we have large volumes of cars coming in,” he says.

SAL is the first tenant at the new multi-terminal, and the company expects the new facility to help drive growth in 2020:

“Based on total car sales in Denmark, we currently have a market share of about 25 per cent. We expect that the additional space and facilities at the new multi-terminal will help us grow our market share in 2020,” says Lodberg.

The new multi-terminal accommodates the increased demand for storage space and a facility from which to ship cars, project cargo, wind turbine component and other goods.

Terminal fully booked

The new 40,000m2 multi-terminal represents an investment of about DKK 15 million for Port Esbjerg, and it accommodates the growing demand for space for storage and shipping of goods. According to Port Esbjerg’s CCO Jesper Bank, the terminal is already fully booked:

“I’m so pleased that the terminal is now in operation and being used by the companies at the port. I hope that it will help to strengthen inter-modal traffic throughout Europe and make moving goods by sea a more attractive mode of transport,” says Bank.

There is direct access from the terminal to the E20 motorway and from the three RoRo ramps that have already been installed at the quay. It is also connected to the two other multi-terminals at the port of Esbjerg.
