A world’s first: Digital twin helps Port Esbjerg triple its wind capacity.

2023

We have found a way to triple of offshore wind capacity. Together with Moffatt & Nichol, we have developed the world’s first digital twin for offshore wind.

This digital tool is essential as port capacity is one of the greatest challenges to the green transition. It will triple the annual shipping capacity for offshore wind installation from 1.5 GW to 4.5 GW in Esbjerg.

“Working with the digital twin is a gamechanger. We can make much better decisions using that tool. And just imagine what we can achieve when we get suppliers entered into it. There’s no reason to think we’ll stop at 4.5 GW", says Port Esbjerg CEO Dennis Jul Pedersen.

The digital twin is a computer program fed with huge amounts of data, enabling it to analyse all port processes related to the shipping of offshore wind installations, using a 1:1 simulation of the port. Everything from storage locations of wind components and space requirements to the impact of high tide and much more. In this way, all processes are optimized.

The digital twin is a dynamic, virtual representation of the port, updated from real time data and using simulation, machine learning and reasoning to help decision making at Port Esbjerg.
