Project overview

NORTHERNSEALYTS has strengthened Port Esbjerg’s ability to meet both civilian and military requirements arising from its strategic position in the North Sea.
As Denmark’s central NATO Host Nation Support port and Europe’s most important export hub for offshore wind turbines, the port depends on infrastructure capable of accommodating larger vessels and higher activity levels.

Through the project, critical limitations related to vessel access have been addressed, supporting both offshore wind logistics and military mobility.

Key outcomes

  • Removal of bottlenecks in the TEN‑T corridor, enabling access for larger vessels.
  • Strengthened infrastructure supporting NATO mobility and Host Nation Support requirements.
  • Reinforced capacity to support the port’s dual civilian and military role under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

As a direct result of NORTHERNSEALYTS, the depth of the Grådyb fairway increased from approximately 10.3 metres to 12.8 metres, while quay depths were adjusted accordingly.
This completed upgrade has significantly improved accessibility for larger offshore wind installation vessels and military ships, strengthening Port Esbjerg’s position within European transport, energy and security infrastructure.

The initiative involves collaboration supported by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
